Successful Seminar on “Earthquake damage investigation in Wenchuan, China and introspection of structure safety”

Organized by DSSOPT and LECM, co-organized by IACM, MABCD, MCA and AEM, the seminar entitled “Earthquake damage investigation in Wenchuan, China and introspection of structure safety” was hold at conference room of Macao Cultural Center on 9 Jan 2009, which was the first special seminar about Wenchuan earthquake from the viewpoint of structure safety in Macao.

The speaker, Dr. XU You-lin is currently the research fellow of China Academy of Building Research, National center for Quality Supervision and Test of Building Engineering, and Chief of Concrete Branch, China Engineering Construction Standardization Association. He also is the visiting professor of Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University and Zhengzhou University. Dr XU has participated and organized the systematically theoretical and experimental research of China Code for design of concrete structures for long time. Consequently he chiefly edits the < Code for design of concrete structures> (GB 50010-2002) and < Code for acceptance of constructional quality of concrete structures> (GB 50204-2002).

As the expert member of Center of earthquake relief, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the PRC, Dr. XU took more than 500 pictures on site and wrote a work note more than 20 thousand words. Combining the great amount of first-hand material of Wenchuan and the fruitful experience of systematic theoretical and experimental research and Construction standardization, Dr. XU introspected the current code for design of concrete structures and the existing building safety. The seminar briefly included – earthquake damage investigation in Wenchuan and introspection of structure safety, and brief introduction to current code for design of concrete structures in China. The damage investigation involved the common structure types in Sichuan province including dwelling houses in village, monsary structures, monsary structures with ground frame, reinforced concrete frame structures, large-span structures, high-rise structures and ancient structures. Other seismic damage phenomena were discussed. Moreover, the attention-getting classroom buildings in elementary schools and middle schools were especially analyzed. Finally, Dr. XU introduced the Code for design of concrete structures in China and the prospect of concrete structure theory and code development.

The seminar attracted the engineers and scholars in Macao region and it was expected to be instructive and helpful for the potential revision of Macao concrete code about seismic design.
